You’d think I’d have a finished pair right now. It’s been most of the summer that these single socks have been lonely. And yet still they wait. Today, we meet Katie and try to find out why she’s still single after being knit so long ago. She was one of my first socks.
Katie: I’ve been waiting longer than everyone else here – and look at me, still I wait. I’m almost a year old. Still, I wait. All these younger girls, these sexy yarns. They get all the attention. I’m just yesterday’s lunchmeat.
N: What’s wrong with your yarn? You’re washable. A nice cotton blend. Beautiful colors.
K: You don’t get it. Now, it’s all about the wools, the merinos, the special and expensice yarns. Just last month I saw 2 skeins of Koigu in the pile. How can I compete with the firm springyness of koigu? Plus, I’m sticky on the needles and scratchy -or so I’ve been told. (Said as she slams down the rest of her Rum and Coke)
N: But your patterning – it’s interesting and not in the least bit boring.
K: But I’m not a Nancy Bush or an Evelyn A. Clark sock. I’m a lame original. In bad yarn. (Motions to the bartender for another drink) There’s no hope for me.
N: Of course there is, there’s hope for everyone…
K: Not for me – I’m not even in a size that fits – I’m an inch too small. What’s the point of knitting something, socks especially if it’s not going to fit…
N: That’s what gifts are for though right?
K: (With sarcasm) Oh, so maybe next christmas I’ll finally meet my mate. Eons from now. Let me hold my breath.
